Panerai – The Rising Star of Luxury Watch Brands
Panerai was founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai who ran a small watch shop in Florence, Italy. Giovanni specialized in mechanical engineering and designing and producing high quality equipment for the Italian Navy. In 1915 Giovanni Panerai developed and patented a process for creating luminous markings for equipment made for the Italian Navy, which he called Radiomir. It is soon after this when the history gets really interesting.
The Italian navy needed a watch for their frogmen and in 1935 Panerai contacted Rolex. They needed a watch that was waterproof, was visible in the dark and big to furter increase the visibility. So it was that the first Panerai watches, from 1935 and all the way to 1954 were actually made by Rolex!
After the Rolex era, Panerai lived a quiet life until the resurrection of the brand in 1993, when the actor Sylvester Stallone stepped into a Panerai store in Florence. He was so excited about the watches that he bought a bunch of them and also decided to wear one in the movie “Daylight”.
This was off course what the Panerai brand needed and pretty much overnight it became the talk of the town, which it still today is.
The Panerai brand has travelled a long way since the start in Giovannis little watch shop in Florence, 1860. With headquarters still in Florence, the manufacturing is based in Neuchatel, Switzerland, Panerai nicely mixes the best of two worlds; Italian design and Swiss quality craftsmanship.

Notable wearers of Panerai
Panerai does not have any official ambassadors, but is often seen in media on the wrists of macho action movie actors. Thanks for Reading My Top 10 Luxury Brands List!
As you might have noticed there were actually 12 brands presented on this list and not 10 as the title suggests. Honestly it is too hard to leave some brands out of a list like this and probably the list will grow in future. The luxury watch market for both men and women continues to grow.
Why Buy a Luxury Watch?
There are many people that ask "Why invest more money to purchase a luxury watch?". There are five main benefits to buying a premium watch brand.
The first benefit is craftsmanship. A luxury watch is incredibly complex. It is exactly made with the finest materials on the planet. A watch such as this is typically delivered by a company with over 100 years of engineering experience. It is the polar opposite of a mass-produced product. Hours, days, weeks, months, years, and even decades of work, and generations of learning lie behind the final production of a luxury watch.
Luxury craftsmanship can be felt. From the bezel to the markings, from the hands to the dial, and from the clasp to the band. When the face of the watch is perfectly balanced as it rests on your arm, you will enjoy just the right weight and the perfect proportions of each one. You know it is made well and when you put it on, it just feels good.
Well-designed things that require a lot of skill to make are a joy to own. It is almost like wearable piece of art you never get tired of. With a luxury watch on your arm, your art goes with you. Whether you feel debonair like James Bond, a pull to impact history like Buzz Aldrin, or take counsel in the company of the likes of the Presidents of the United States, when it comes to choosing your watch – a quality luxury watch is the best choice.
A luxury watch bought today may very well be worth more later. Expensive watches tend to appreciate over time. If you think about it, you may well find it cheaper to invest in an expensive watch today but know it will gain value in the future. Instead of buying a series of throw-away watches over a period of decades, you could potentially buy one watch that will not only work well but keep its value as well.
Here are the top 10 luxury watch models and brands that appreciate in value according to WatchTime:
- Rolex Submariner
- Omega Seamaster
- Rolex Sea Dweller
- Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
- Rolex Sky Dweller
- Jaegar LeCoultre Reverso
- Omega Speedmaster
- Patek Philippe Nautilus
- TAG Heuer Monaco
- Panerai Luminor
A luxury watch holds its value instead of losing it. At the end of the day, you will have something of value that can be potentially be sold for a profit anywhere in the world – even if that transaction does not occur for twenty or thirty years. In the meantime, you have an easily accessible, hands-on asset which you can enjoy every day.
In life, how you dress and how you present yourself are important to people. You are judged everyday by the people you interact with based on your appearance. What do you want them to think about you? Do you want them to judge you as someone who is successful? What potential doors may be opened for you simply on how you look?
The model of watch you wear says something about you – to you and to those around you. When you wear your high-end watch, you may pick up on a glance of knowing respect from those you do business with. It’s not an economy accessory. It’s a small sign you are an accomplished person.
A finely made watch is the embodiment of some of the best virtues of man. Disciplined, hardworking, complicatedly built, innovative, sleek, valuable. A fine face with an intricate operating system, compactly wrapped up in the best materials money can buy.
Whatever you bring into your wardrobe, you make a statement to yourself. Every time you get up in the morning and select what to wear to present yourself to the world, you make a choice.
A luxury watch is more than a watch. It’s the reminder to yourself of who you are – or perhaps – who you want to be. This is your line in the sand – right on your wrist. An hourly reminder of where you are going. The familiar weight of the band is like an unfailing reminder.
What do you think about the list?
Though there are many luxury watches in the world, all things considered, they are still rare. A luxury watch is unique, it is distinctive, it is extraordinary… kind of like the person who buys them. A watch like this begs for a life set apart. Like a stallion rejoicing in its strength, or a ship expertly navigating the currents in the ocean waves, a luxury watch longs to be put to the absolute test.
